The Wishing Siblings

There was one time deep in the country, close to a big lake coast, two little brothers one of eleven and the other twelve, who used to live with their mother and father.

Those brothers were going to a boarding school in the morning and in afternoon hours they used to work with mother in a wheat field picking up the grains, packing them into sacs to place them on a carriage guided by their father, who every two weeks went to a far town in order to find someone who could buy his merchandise.
But not every time the sacrificed man managed to sell the wheat, since sometimes he was returning days later with the entire load because he couldn’t find anyone to sell the grains to, so therefore the mother and the two kids wished him luck, every time he departed to the far away town.

When  lucky he was able to sell the entire load,  but many times he returned with no money because he couldn’t sell the merchandise, so those sacs of grain had to be given to the animals because they were expired and no longer good for human meals.

The mother and the kids continued wishing luck to that sad man, hoping every time that father found someone who could buy the wheat.
One day that man was very sad and he was ready to leave in his carriage dragged by two mules. As always the mother and the two kids wished him luck, the man thoughtfully sat down, pulled the strings and left.

The days passed by and mother and the two kids were worry because the man wasn’t back yet after many days, they started to wait and those days became weeks and the weeks became months and the months became years and the father never came back from his journey, they were really preoccupied and mother had to start growing crops to have something to eat.

Six years went by and the boys no longer were kids, they turned into young men who now were in charge of the small business together with mother.
They still wished that if one day they went to the far town, they didn’t have to come back carrying the merchandise back, so far the wheat had been sold in small portions to whomsoever needed it in the vicinity.
One day the siblings decided to go for the first time to the far town to prove fortune and to take advantage of their trip to ask people if they knew what happened with their father.

Mother was really concerned, she already had lost her husband to an unknown trip and now she feared losing also her kids.

Three weeks later when the wheat was ready to reap and harvest, a carriage pulled by a remaining mule was loaded and the two boys were ready to leave the house in an attempt to reach for the far town, sell the wheat and find out what had occurred with their old man.

The next day, very early in the morning mother was saying goodbye to the siblings who were now ready to start the long trip toward the distant village, she sadly wished them luck and provided them and the mule with enough food and provisions for the journey.
Three days later they were arriving to a busy parish full of horses and donkeys carrying merchandise and people doing business in the markets and trading seeds and produce.
They went around asking people if they knew their father, nobody had an idea of what happened six years earlier until they arrived to a tent attended by an old man with a big beard, they offered the wheat to the elder.
“Where is this wheat coming from?” The man asked, grabbing a handful of wheat.
“From our small farm” replied one of the brothers
“This wheat is very familiar to me, is the same one that Abdul used to bring to town
“Abdul?”   The boys asked anxiously. “Do you know him?”
“Yes, I know him” replied the old merchant “but who are you?” He asked to the boys.
“We are his sons” responded one of them “he is our father”
The old man was very happy, he knew that some day the sons of his good friend Abdul will come to town to sell their wheat and he would be delighted to tell them where to sell it in order to surprise them.
“Do you see that big barn?”  The old man asked, pointing to a business located on the main street of town set with a receiver place and an entrance to load and unload all kind of grains, the name of the commerce was written in big letters in the front wall ‘The Wishing Siblings’
“Yes” they responded “we see it”
“That business opened just days ago, after many sacrifices to help those, who come to town and wished to sell or trade their crops” he explained  “go there and I assure, you will be able to sell or trade your merchandise”
“Thank you” they said and pulled the strings to hurry the mule to that place.
When they got there they saw a man on the back, who was talking to one of the workers.
“Can we sell our wheat here?” One of the boys asked.
The receiver turned his back and the boys were astonished to see that familiar face, the face of their father right in front of them, that guy was Abdul, the man who six years earlier left home with a load of wheat and never came back.
“Father!” The boys shouted in shock
“My kids!” Their father sobbed about to explode in tears. He approached to them and hugged them asking for forgiveness, the boys were very pleased to see their old man again and right away understood that he never forgot about them, they knew and were able to see that he left for a while only to build the way to later become a good provider

After the surprising encounter the father showed them the business that he now possessed, the one he had made from scratch and gratefully named after his kid’s big hopes, the hopes that one day became reality, as they always wished him good luck and now they could sell or trade all the wheat and grains they wanted to, for being the owners.
The next day Abdul finally returned back to town with his beloved kids and his heart loaded with reasons for his wife, that not only will surprise mother but give her happiness by holding the good news of having a prosperous business not only made with his prolonged absence and sacrifice but also with the help of the strong hope of her and his wishing siblings.

The End.
