At this time Jesus came from
Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And as
he was coming up from the water, he saw the heavens opening and the
Spirit, like a dove, coming down upon him. And a voice from heaven
said,
"Thou art my beloved Son,
In thee I am well pleased."
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted
by the devil. And after he had fasted forty days and forty nights he
was hungry. Then the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the
Son of God, command these stones to become bread." But Jesus
answered, "It is written,
"'Man is not to live on bread alone,
But on every word that comes from God.'"
Then the devil took him to the holy city and, setting him on the
highest point of the Temple, said to him, "If you are the Son of
God, throw yourself down; for it is written,
"'He will give his angels charge of you,
And on their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus said to him, "It is also written,
"'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"
Once more the devil took him to a high mountain and showed him all
the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and he said to him, "All
these things I will give you if you will fall down and worship me."
Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! for it is written,
"'You shall worship the Lord your God,
And him only shall you serve.'"
